Neck and shoulder pain and tightness is very common. Working on computer keyboards, bending your neck forward whilst looking at your phone, stress or injury are all possible causes.
The Traps.
The trapezius muscle is commonly involved as it covers the upper back and shoulders, then attaches to the base of the skull. Many people become hunched in this area as they work on computers, and very soon the levator scapula becomes involved as well (see video above).
Nerve Damage

Whiplash is also common cause of chronic neck pain due to long term scar tissue build up, joint and muscle and nerve damage.

It is not uncommon to experience numbness, tingling and pain into the shoulder, down the arm and into the fingers if the exiting neck spinal nerves are compressed by a bulging disc or other soft tissue pathology.

Electro-Acupuncture and massage used together may help reduce neck and shoulder pain.

Acupuncture frees up the blocked areas of the neck, allowing increased movement and substantial relief.

Arthritic conditions of the neck can also be assessed.

The Rotator Cuff

The rotator cuff is a group of 4 muscles which basically hold the upper arm in the shoulder socket. It is commonly injured due to lifting, throwing, gardening, working and even too much freestyle!

The most commonly injured muscle is the supraspinatus, this pain is felt when your lift your arm above shoulder level. Sometimes it will radiate down the arm as well.

Of course any pain in this region may also be due to some form of nerve impingement in the neck. It is important to correctly diagnose what the issue is, so that you get the right treatment.

Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder occurs when the shoulder joint capsule tightens up to the point where it is difficult and often painful to move your arm. The pain can be so bad that it may effect sleep and the ability to function normally.

Electro-acupuncture to release the rotator cuff and ultimately free up the joint capsule can be a very effective treatment.
